You don’t have be a technical wizard to play cool sounding licks. For example, using pull offs and open strings can be a very effective way to play smooth, flowing lines.
Here’s a few examples , and YES! I have the tabs for you too. ![]()

Of course, on “How to Play Smokin’ Blues”, i do more than just play licks. I give you in depth explainations and theory, along with the 245 tabbed examples. Enjoy!

The one thing I wish is that we could know the key. I have been playing rythym for years and finally decided to try some lead stuff. If I know the key I know where to begin -like where the same blues tracks are. They are traditional 1,4,5 12-bar blues but is it a, e ,f OR e, a ,b? i AM NOT GOOD WITH LEADS AND REALLY WANT TO FIND PATTERNS SCALES AND LICKS-THAT IS WHERE THIS SITE CAN HELP ME
I am a slighly above average musician, and a multi-instrumentalist, I sound fairly well, however one thing I would really enjoy is instruction on tone including manipulating amp specs, Treble, Mid, Reverb and tone knobs on electric instrument, I really respect what you do to help aspiring guitarists and offer my thanks. I haven’t been playing the guitar all that long, but have been playing the Violin for a number of years, so I am simply interested in how to produce certain tones because obviously electric instruments are new to me. Also you are a talented individual and I wish you the best with your investment in music education.
Sincerely,
Raul Morales
“i want to play like jimmy hendrix” — Wow! So would I, but that would be like saying I want to be as smart as Albert Einstein.
Getting “fatter” strings (diameter) and de-tuning (tune down half a step) plus adding a “Wah-Wah” pedal will help, but nothing will replace your determination and drive. You will have to Practice and Practice and Practice…and Practice — until your finger tips are red and raw and ready to bleed (sometimes they will bleed).
If you feel you can do this, there are several good dvd’s out that will guide you in the right direction. Claude’s being one of them. Good Luck!
“Steve”
WOW!
I love that sound!!! It goes right to my heart and soul, now if I could only make that sound flow from my heart and soul I would be blessed beyond belief. Practice practice practice!!! My God, I love that sound… thank you!
